History

Casera was launched in 1951 as the employee credit union of CN’s Transcona Shops. In postwar Winnipeg, it was difficult for young families to acquire financing from banks, so the initiative of the 10 CN tradesmen who co-founded Transcona Credit Union made it easier for them and their coworkers to save money and secure loans. Since then, we’ve remained true to our founders’ vision of co-operation and community.

Over the years, we contributed our share of ‘firsts’ to Manitoba’s financial industry  – including installing the province’s first walk-up teller for off-hours service in 1970, pioneering Drive-Thru ATMs at credit unions in 1995, and in 2009, becoming the first credit union to offer mobile banking.

Our credit union was renamed Casera in 2006 when we added a third branch in south St. Vital to complement our two long-time locations in Transcona. Whatever community Casera serves, we strongly support youth and community-focused endeavours. For instance, we helped establish Titan Credit Union, our award-winning youth branch at Transcona Collegiate Institute. We sponsor the Casera Walk With L’Arche, with monies raised going to aiding developmentally disabled Winnipeggers and we also sponsor Save Our Seine’s environmental initiatives to cleanup and sustain the Seine River.

Casera was founded on the shoulders of ten individuals who saw a need for accessible and affordable financial services. Their vision remains our inspiration and our success is their legacy.
