2020 Casera Community Awards

2020 Casera Community Leadership Award | Denis Gautron

For more than 11 years, Denis Gautron has been an active member of, a determined advocate for, and an inspiring leader within Save Our Seine River Environment Incorporated (SOS). The non-profit organization focuses on preserving and enhancing the Seine River Greenway, including the neighbourhoods of South St. Vital and St. Boniface. Since 2009, Denis has been tireless in his quest to help SOS raise awareness of the natural area's beauty and benefits.

Denis served as SOS's President from 2012 to 2019 and now sits on the Board of Directors as Past-President. Over the years, he has spent countless hours leading the Board through its decision-making. Denis has represented the organization in meetings and negotiations with the City of Winnipeg and the Province of Manitoba. He also acts as a public school liaison and bilingual media and community spokesperson for SOS.

As a leader, Denis has earned respect from the people he works with and the communities he serves. Under his leadership, SOS has grown and the Greenway has become a much-loved natural experience for Winnipeggers of all ages.

2020 Casera Community Enrichment Award | Board of Directors of the Transcona Jaycees Day Care Centre Inc.

Caring for our community's most precious citizens begins with maintaining a safe space for pre-schoolers to grow and learn in a safe, stimulating, and nurturing environment. The Transcona Jaycees Day Care Centre Inc. is such a place — a home away from home for 78 youngsters between the ages of two and 12 staffed by a team of 13 warmhearted early childhood educators led by Executive Director Jennifer Stewart and Assistant Director Gail Pilcher.

The Centre has provided high-quality daycare services to Transcona families since 1976. Ensuring that the pre-school and before and after school programs meet government standards and the expectations of parents is the responsibility of the Centre's Board of Directors. Dedicated to the concept of community-focused childcare, the Board is comprised of President Roger Tychonick, Vice President and Director of Personnel Harold Erickson, Secretary Tudra Kolesar, Treasurer Peter Owen, and Members at Large Lindsay Riel, Lisa Medina, and Melissa Burgess.

Collectively, the Centre’s Board is tasked with sustaining a valuable source of childcare for the Transcona community. Their success is a testament to their hard work and caring.

2020 Casera Community Enrichment Award | Save Our Seine River Environment Inc.

The Seine River is as historically significant to Winnipeg's development as its two more well-known watery sisters, the Red and Assiniboine. However, comparatively forgotten over time, the Seine became a dumping ground until the early 1990s when a committed group of the river's neighbours took action and organized a community cleanup. Four years later, Save Our Seine River Environment (SOS) was incorporated, and the serious work of cleaning up a century of neglect and mistreatment began.

Through river cleanups, environmental advocacy, and public programming, SOS has evolved into a respected waterway protector and educator. Among a growing list of projects, the group spearheaded the preservation of Bois-des-Esprits, a pristine, 82-acre urban riverbottom forest, and collaborated with the Manitoba Eco-Network to construct the Niakwa Trail Rain Garden. It also established an Adopt-a-River program that provides students with hands-on opportunities to learn about waterways and the natural environment.

Determined to save a vital waterway that time and history forgot, SOS’s volunteers and staff also resolve to continue their environmental stewardship. Their advocacy today ensures that tomorrow's generations will continue to enjoy the Seine River environment.
